I haven't heard any beta news myself yet.

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
i* think rtcw:et was the best game released at the... (crap, ok... ) was one of the best first person shooter games released at the time. and it was (eventually) free! ask anyone who played, and they will (mostly) tell you the same: rtcw:et ftw!!!! rtcw:et = underrated * i'm not an expert (actually i am, and i hate you )

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein: ET Grey. RTCW was the predecessor that wansn't free, W:ET was always free. This is a sequel to RTCW AFAICT. I really liked RTCW, and felt it was more refined than W:ET, even though I felt w:et was a better multiplayer game.

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
Less than a week until release ... I have not seen a ton of previews and they are keeping a tight lid on the multiplayer aspect. I hope this is not due to it being mediocre.

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
I got another pre-order promo email today http://atvi.cmail4.com/T/ViewEmail/y/FB ... E12DB8921DI also got an email from Activision asking if I wanted to be an official hoster for the game and host some tourney events etc. I would have been interested in the past but I'm just too busy right now with my other work. I'm not planning on buying this right now, just not a lot of game time lately. If any of you get it please post and let us know how you like it. I'm sure some of the old school RTCW'ers will show up again online after the release. The wolf channel in IRC is always packed.

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
here we go...
I preordered Wolfenstein from Amazon a month ago. paid the extra dollar for day of release delivery. I installed it last night and have played through roughly 1/3 - 1/2 of the game. Initial reaction is simple. This is not RTCW2 this is in fact COD world at war Wolfenstein edition. From the same hud to stars on the comaps, looking down the sites man it is the same. Gameplay is NOTHING LIKE RTCW or ET. but as I have been playing the Wolfenstein games since 81-2 on the Apple II, I can not bash it too much. The gameplay involves the finding and reading of intel, tomes, and treasure. Treasure is used to buy weapon upgrades from the "black market" store. thankfully they are presistant, my MP40 now has a bigger clip, silencer, big bore kit, and improved riffling. basically I need almost no other weapon. THe whole occult, vale thing is weird, and is almost too tedious. You have to walk through each area 3 times looking for diferent secrets and such. it is interesting but is just another "limited resource" super weapon. It makes you pretty much unbeatable but it only works for a limited time, then you have to find pools to replenish it. Some levels/tasks can not be beaten without it. Overall i am not very impressed. The graphics and sound are great. i am running 1680X1050 all settings on high, and it is very smoothe. The notebook and map system allow for the taking of missions in any order you choose which makes it unique. A linear game where the lines are taken in a number of different orders. I played 5 minutes of MP locally last night. only 3 classes and the engineer also gives out ammo. Not sure how that is going to go over. but I have not played it enough yet to judge the MP. Overall I would say this. Wolfenstein fans (alright, freaks) like me should get it. this is very likley the last Wolf ganme there will ever be. You will have fun playing it, and it will replay a few times. But i don't believe it will have the legs of ET or RTCW in general. And if you hated CoD WaW or any of the COD games (not 4 modern warfare) then you will not like this game. the gameplay mechanic is almost identical. just the addition of the wolfenstein story and the vale thing.
A history lesson on Wolfenstein in general. (this is from the dark recesses of my brain i did not go to wikipedia for any of it, so be kind)
Early 80's it was a very popular top down scroller on the Apple II. There were 2-3 versions of that game.
Then id came out with Wolfenstein 3D on the PC and the add on packs tha came later "spear of destiny" was one.
Then a number of year later they cam out with RTCW. it was a full retail game and had both a single player and multi player code. It had a number of map packs and updates. a GOTY edition was released later.
ET was a weird bird. it was designed to be a fully retail sequel to RTCW. It however suffered from code problems and delays the problem got so bad that id released the MP code for free under the GPL. The Single player (story mode) was never released. it is rumored to exist and there were even some early gameplay videos leaked, but the code never was, and so ET went on to be very popular. I still play it daily.
An interesting trivia bit about ET. It was leaked early (the beta) and the entire voice chat system was totally different. the codes were in a different order and the sounds were changed. The people who got the leaked version (me) and the beta testers (me again) were so PISSED (totally me i was swearing in every bug email I sent) that they changed it back to the order from RTCW.
I have noticed something about the gameplay of FPS in general and Wolfenstein specifically. The gameplay has been getting slower. If yoou play RTCW now you will be amazed how fast it is, ET was noticeably slower, and Wolfenstein is slower yet. One of the reasons I was never a big fan of the CoD series was the slowness of movement. now Wolfenstein has become that slow. Play them back to back one day. you will be amazed at the transition over the games.

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
On one hand I am very disappointed with the review. (not a cod fan at all) but on the other I am happy that I won't be as anxious to upgrade! Have you posted your comp specs somewhere you can link faentur?

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
hey faentur... Thanks for sharing your review. Most likely I won't be getting it, just not enough gaming time right now. I do still play ET for a few minutes a few times a week though. It seems like there was a little less pre-release hype than normal for this release. Maybe I just missed some of it not checking gaming sites enough a few months before release. anyway, thanks for sharing the detailed review.. I'm just playing the freebie ET for now, spending my other free time watching the tube, eating dinner etc relaxing after work working on de-stressing from my project work and my bosses impossible work deadlines. I'm going to post some pics of ET playing on my new 32" LCD TV I just got a few weeks ago. I ran a VGA cable to my laptop to see what it would look like on the big screen LCD.. hehe. pretty fun

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
Great post Faentur.
I enjoy engie having ammo and no fops spam, and think the MP could be decent tweaked and modded. I just can't find populated servers - and if I can, I can't join a team ? - so I've started playing ET again.
The game runs well on my system

 Re: Pre-order Wolfenstein
Thanks for the review Feantur. I have to say I'm kinda disappointed to hear that it's so similar to COD. I like COD ok, but not enough to play it regularly. Might get it anyway, since it's Wolfenstein. K-dog wrote: Wolfenstein: ET Grey. RTCW was the predecessor that wansn't free, W:ET was always free. This is a sequel to RTCW AFAICT. Yeah, it wasn't going to be free until they failed to complete the SP portion, that's what I meant by it "eventually" being free. I agree that RTCW was more polished. It would have been interesting to see how things would have gone if they managed to pull off the full retail release. I think the fact that it was free brought in a lot of players that would have passed on it if they had to pay.
